Roundtable Sharing Session on Community of Practice (CoP): Building a Mobile Learning Community

Ms Stamper is an English Enhancement Program Instructor in the Centre for Language in Education at the HKIEd. She has been teaching English with technology since 1993.  Her experiences include 18 years in leadership roles in the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages Computer-assisted Language Learning Interest Section (TESOL CALL-IS) and 1.5 years as co-chair of the Teacher Education Special Interest Group in the Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO TE-SIG).  Her current interests include using mobile technologies for language learning.

Abstract: What apps or tools facilitate learning and teaching in English medium courses? Ms Stamper will share her experiences from two years in a multidisciplinary Community of Practice (CoP) using iPads as a means of fostering student learning and engagement at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).  After briefly describing some of the CoP’s key features and results from a survey on student perceptions, she will introduce a variety of apps and demonstrate how they were used in English for Academic Purposes classes.

After the formal presentation, the roundtable sharing of the following issues will be discussed:

1.   Apps/tools used in learning and teaching, especially those that support English
2.   Questions about using mobile technology
3.   Solutions and suggestions for other participants
4.   Suggestions for HKIEd’s mobile learning CoP

Participants are encouraged to bring and use their mobile devices in the sharing session.
