Abstract

Developing Pre-Service Language Teachers’ Intercultural Identity

Our TDG project, informed by the existing theories from language teacher identity and interdisciplinary perspectives on intercultural competence, explored how to use effective methods to enhance English and Chinese pre-service teachers’ awareness of cultural diversity, reduce ethnocentricity, and promote meaningful engagement. In this presentation, we will share our theoretically informed practices adopting concept building, digital mind mapping, and reflective activities to develop a positive intercultural identity that supports pre-service language teachers in efficiently communicating across cultural boundaries, avoiding ethnocentric perspectives, and displaying cultural humility. We also propose several considerations that need to be taken into account in designing effective training approaches for promoting intercultural identity in pre-service teacher education.
