Introduction
The Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC) has developed the Staff Professional Development (SPD) Programme for all academic/teaching staff of the University. In partnership with academic departments and Teaching Development Grant (TDG) project teams, LTTC has organized a series of SPD activities since August 2013. The SPD Programme consists of different components as below.
Certificate Course “Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education”
The Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC), in partnership with Faculties, Departments and Library, has organized the Certificate Course “Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education”. The Certificate Course is designed and developed to equip and extend new academic/teaching staff and RPg students with essential knowledge and skills in teaching in higher education.
This Certificate Course is designed to
- support new academic/teaching staff/RPg student to adapt to a new professional life at EdUHK; and
- provide an opportunity for new academic/teaching staff/RPg students to develop their professionalism related to learning and teaching, and scholarship of learning and teaching in Higher Education.
Through their participation in the Certificate Course, new academic/teaching staff/RPg student will be able to
- recognize the policy of learning, teaching and assessment at EdUHK;
- outline EdUHK students’ academic background;
- understand the good practices of learning and teaching in Higher Education;
- obtain access to learning and teaching resources and support;
- consider the application of technologies to enhance student learning; and
- develop learning and teaching networks at personal, departmental and university levels.
- The Certificate Course is mandatory for the new full-time academic/teaching staff who have fewer than one year of full-time teaching experience in Higher Education, as well as academic/teaching staff who are recommended by the Head of relevant Department.
- The Certificate Course is mandatory for PhD students admitted in or after 2023/24. However, PhD students from other cohorts and all EdD students are welcome to participate in the course. Upon completion, a Certificate of Attendance for the “Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education” Course will be issued.
Course Structure
Theme I: Induction – Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education Settings
- Minimum Hours of Attendance: 6
- Two 3-hour sessions organized by LTTC
- Providing basic information related to learning, teaching, and assessment at EdUHK, such as vision and mission; policy of teaching, learning, and assessment; student academic backgrounds; information about learning and teaching support; pedagogical considerations of integrating technologies in learning and teaching, etc.
The Induction is delivered by LTTC staff and academic staff from different departments and other academic support units of the University. Please click HERE to view the scheduled workshops and know more details.
Theme II: Practicum
- Minimum Hours of Attendance: 6
- Practicum activities for at least 6 hours should be planned by the Department/ CLE
- At least 1 class observation should be arranged (1 Practicum Report should be submitted for each class observed)
- Providing opportunities to receive support from peers on their teaching practices, enhance their strategies and skills in discipline-based learning and teaching, as well as obtain advice for future planning and development

Theme III: Learning and Teaching Seminars/Workshops *
- Minimum Hours of Attendance: 3
- Seminars/workshops organized by LTTC/Faculties/Departments
- Providing exemplars of strategies and skills for quality teaching, include topics related to human care, experience sharing by Teaching Awardees, talks related to learning and teaching provided by experienced academic/teaching staff of EdUHK, and investigators of UGC/Institutional/Faculty-supported TDG projects and CoP projects

Theme IV: Learning and Teaching Support *
- Minimum Hours of Attendance: 3
- Workshops organized by Library or LTTC
- Providing research-related and technology-related skills and practices for the development of their scholarship of learning and teaching and innovative teaching, such as Exploring iSearch, Avoiding Plagiarism and Citing Sources of Information, Using Moodle Course Reports to Track the Student Engagement, Using Panopto to create presentation etc.

Requirement for Awarding Certificate Issued by LTTC
All full-time academic/teaching staff and RPg students are eligible to apply for the Certificate in Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education or Certificate of Attendance in “Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education” Course:
Certificate in Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education
To be awarded the “Certificate in Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education”, participants are required to:
- complete all themes with a total of 18 hours of the Course
- submit the “Certificate in Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education Request Form”
- submit the Practicum Form endorsed by HoD/Hd(CLE)
- submit reflective statements (about 250 to 500 words) in both the Request Form and Practicum Form
- submit the Practicum Reports written by mentors/observers to HoD/Hd(CLE) and Faculty
- request for the Certificate within two years after joining the University

To be awarded the “Certificate of Attendance in ‘Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education’ Course”, participants are required to:
- complete Theme 1, 3 and 4 with a minimum of 12 hours of attendance
- submit the “Certificate of Attendance in ‘Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education’ Course Request Form”
- request for the Certificate within two years after joining the University
