Learning Analytics

Introduction

Utilising user data stored by our learning management system Moodle, Learning Analytics offers a data-driven way to assist academic/ teaching staff in better understanding how students learn and how they make use of various course resources.

To facilitate more transparent understanding and well-informed decisions by course instructors in relation to student engagement, learning progression and pedagogical adjustments, the Centre regularly organises workshops, seminars and sharing sessions for introducing a variety of learning analytics tools for academic/ teaching staff to adopt in their courses.

More details of each workshop are as follows:

Artificial Intelligence Concepts Behind Learning Analytics

The current availability of big data has catalysed significant developments of artificial intelligence (AI) in many different areas including teaching and learning. Learning analytics, which uses students’ usage data on Moodle to better understand how they learn, can be a good example application area of AI. This workshop aims to introduce the fundamental concepts and applications of AI to participants without coding background. The learning analytics tool used as example in the workshop hopes to initiate further exploration of how AI can be applied to individual practices of teaching and learning.

Visualising Students’ Activities on Moodle via Behaviour Analytics

By representing Moodle activities and resources as dots, Behaviour Analytics allows visualisation of learners’ behaviour on Moodle in the form of a path navigating through these dots. This tool, furthermore, allows clustering of learners into different groups based on their learning patterns. By the end of this workshop you will gain some hands-on experience in using Behaviour Analytics in your Moodle courses.

Tracking Contribution to Discussion Forums on Moodle and Overviewing Student Moodle Activities with IntelliBoard Reports

This workshop introduces two tools for tracking student activities on Moodle: Discussion Forum Participation provides instructors with summaries regarding contributions to Moodle discussion forums at the level of individual learners, groups and the entire course. IntelliBoard reports, on the other hand, allow instructors to have an overview of activities on Moodle and to identify inactive students.

BookRoll: A Learning Analytics Tool Specific for Reading of Articles

Reading is a common part of our courses, but often we have little information about how students read, e.g., how much time they spend on different pages, which parts they have more questions. BookRoll is a learning analytics tool that aims at tackling these needs: BookRoll provides an interface for students to read articles uploaded by teachers while allowing them to add notes and highlight texts of their choice. Students’ reading activities will then be summarised in a dashboard for further scrutiny by teachers. Through this workshop participants will learn how all these can be done with BookRoll through Moodle.

Understanding Machine Learning Through Working with a Learning Analytics Tool in Moodle

The availability of learning data facilitates the use of machine learning to understand behavior of learners in teaching and learning. Learning analytics, which uses students’ data to better understand how they learn, can be a good example of using AI in education. Behavior analytics is a free Moodle plug-in and has been fully installed in the Moodle of EdUHK. This is a good example to learn how to use learning analytics in your courses as well as understand machine learning through your teaching. With Behavior Analytics as a main example, this workshop aims to introduce some fundamental concepts of machine learning and application of AI in education for everyone.

Getting in Touch with ChatGPT-like Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Generative Tools: Implications for Teaching in Higher Education

ChatGPT, which demonstrates strong capabilities in generating human-like textual responses, has recently received a lot of attention. These kinds of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled generative tools deserve deeper understanding from us. This workshop will provide participants with an overview of AI-enabled generative tools and hands-on experience. There will be a discussion on its implications for teaching in higher education in this workshop.

Demonstration of Tools for Detecting AI-generated Text

AI-enabled generative tools have garnered significant attention in recent months, especially in the education sector. This has prompted educators to consider how to detect text generated by AI-enabled generative tools. In this session, therefore, several tools such as GPTZero for detecting AI-generated text will be demonstrated for participants to consider.
